Can Thermage and Re2O be done on the same day?
Yes. Thermage and Re2O can be done on the same day, and when they are, the Thermage treatment is commonly done first and the Re2O injections afterwards. That way the injected material is not heated or pressed by the treatment tip, and fresh injection bumps do not get in the way of the tip's even contact with the skin. Separate visits can be the better choice for sensitive skin, a first treatment, or an event coming up soon, and the decision is made at consultation.
Same day or not, the two are combined for the same reason: they address two different problems in the skin layer.
Why combine them at all
Thermage FLX uses monopolar radiofrequency to heat a broad zone of the dermis and the fibrous strands beneath it. Collagen contracts, and over months the skin firms. Re2O is an injectable skin booster made from human acellular dermal matrix, aimed at the quality of the skin: texture, fine lines, dryness and thickness. One works on firmness, the other on quality.
In his column on Elravie Re2O, Dr. Kim notes that Re2O can be used alone, but that it is often paired with focused ultrasound such as Ulthera or with radiofrequency such as Thermage: the device works on lifting and firmness, while Re2O works on the quality and structure of the dermis itself (column on Elravie Re2O, 2026). In his answers to patients, he also explains that radiofrequency suits fine wrinkles and skin elasticity better than focused ultrasound (signed answers to patients, 2026).
Why the order usually matters
- Even contact: the Thermage tip needs flat, even contact with the skin, guided by a grid. Raised bumps from fresh injections make that harder.
- Fresh needle points: placing a heated tip over skin that has just been punctured many times is generally avoided.
- Protecting the injected material: doing the injections last means the material is placed after heating and is not pressed by the tip.
- Comfort: numbing cream applied before the visit can serve both treatments.
These are general principles. The exact sequence and timing for you are decided at consultation, based on your skin and the areas treated.
What a same-day visit usually looks like
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| Assessment | The skin and the deeper layers are examined, and the plan for each area is confirmed. |
| Preparation | Cleansing, numbing cream, and a grid marked on the skin for Thermage. |
| Thermage | The tip is placed square by square in several passes. Each pulse gives brief deep heat, followed by cooling. This part usually takes the longest. |
| Cleansing | The grid and coupling fluid are removed, and the skin is disinfected. |
| Re2O | Small amounts are injected across the area. Dr. Kim's column describes a session as taking roughly ten minutes. |
| Aftercare | Instructions for the next days, and a plan for any further Re2O sessions. |
Allow extra time for numbing and for the Thermage passes. Typical treatment time for Thermage alone is about an hour or more, depending on the areas and tips.
When separate visits are better
- Your first time: doing each treatment alone shows how your skin reacts to each one.
- Sensitive or reactive skin: spreading the effects can be gentler.
- An event soon: injection bumps and redness are usually short-lived, but separating treatments can limit what is visible on a given day.
- A course of boosters: Re2O is often given as more than one session, so Thermage may simply be paired with one of them.
How the sessions are often arranged
Thermage is usually a single session, reassessed later. In his answers to patients, Dr. Kim describes its effect as typically lasting around ten months to a year. Re2O works differently: according to his column, one session can already help, and around three sessions spaced three to four weeks apart give a fuller effect.
One common arrangement is therefore Thermage together with the first Re2O session, followed by further Re2O sessions a few weeks apart. This is an example, not a fixed protocol: the number of booster sessions depends on how the skin responds, and some people need only one of the two treatments.
Aftercare and downtime
| Timing | Typical course |
|---|---|
| Same day | Redness and warmth from Thermage, usually settling within hours. Small raised bumps at Re2O injection points, which usually settle within the day. No makeup on the day of injections. |
| First days | Mild swelling, more noticeable around the eyes if treated. Bruising is possible. |
| First week | Dr. Kim's column advises avoiding alcohol, saunas and smoking for about a week after Re2O. |
| About 2–6 months | Gradual firming from Thermage. Texture changes from Re2O develop over weeks and vary. |
Results are gradual and modest, vary between people, and cannot be guaranteed.
If you are visiting Seoul
For visitors with only a few days, a same-day visit is often the practical choice, because it avoids a second appointment. A few points help:
- Plan the treatment early in your stay rather than the day before a flight, so that any swelling or bruising can settle and questions can be answered in person.
- Bring a list of your medicines and supplements, especially blood thinners, and details of any recent fillers, threads or skin treatments.
- Ask how further Re2O sessions could be arranged if you will not be back within three to four weeks, and whether a single session is reasonable for you.
- Avoid saunas, which are a common part of a Seoul visit, for about a week after Re2O.
More on timing a visit is in Planning non-surgical lifting on a visit to Seoul.
Risks of combining
Doing both on one day adds their effects together for a few days: more redness, more swelling and possible bruising at the same time. Beyond that, each keeps its own risks. For Thermage these include discomfort, temporary marks and, rarely, blisters, burns or small surface dents. For Re2O they include bumps, bruising, lumps, rare infection and possible allergic or immune reactions, with long-term data still limited because the product is relatively new.
Thermage is generally not used with a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device. Injections are usually avoided during pregnancy or breastfeeding and with active infection in the area. If you prefer not to receive a product made from human tissue, say so; other skin treatments can be discussed.
Who this combination does not suit
Thermage and Re2O both work on the skin. They do not lift jowls that hang below the jawline, remove excess skin or correct a low brow. When the deeper support has loosened, Ulthera is more relevant; when volume is lost, Sculptra; when sagging is marked, a mini facelift or facelift. Dr. Kim trained in facial surgery and will say when surgery is the better answer, although he does not perform surgery at Violacell. See When is non-surgical lifting not enough?
Why it matters who plans it
Combining treatments well is mostly about deciding what each one is for, and in what order. Dr. Kim has written about Re2O and about pairing it with energy devices in his own column, and in 2026 he gave a theory lecture to about 100 clinicians at the DEEP Symposium in Seoul on stepwise combination treatment for skin quality (Doctor's News, August 2026). Trained in plastic surgery at Chonnam National University, where he was a clinical professor, he starts from the layer that has changed. Why Dr. Kim for Thermage and Re2O
Common questions
Which comes first, Thermage or Re2O?
On the same day, Thermage is commonly done first and the Re2O injections afterwards, so that the injected material is not heated or pressed by the tip and injection bumps do not interfere with even contact. The sequence is confirmed at consultation.
Is it safe to do both on the same day?
They are commonly combined, but doing both adds their short-term effects together, such as redness, swelling and possible bruising. Each treatment keeps its own risks, which are discussed before treatment.
How much downtime should I plan for?
Usually little. Redness from Thermage tends to settle within hours, and Re2O bumps usually within the day. Mild swelling or bruising can last a few days. Alcohol, saunas and smoking are best avoided for about a week after Re2O.
Do I need more than one visit?
Often, for the booster. Thermage is usually a single session, while Re2O is often given as a course; Dr. Kim's column describes around three sessions spaced three to four weeks apart for a fuller effect.
Can Re2O be combined with Ulthera instead of Thermage?
Yes. Dr. Kim notes in his column that Re2O is often paired with either focused ultrasound such as Ulthera or radiofrequency such as Thermage. Which device fits depends on whether the main change is in the skin or in the deeper support layer.
